Se existe um nome dentro do rock/metal que merece a alcunha SUPERGRUPO (com letras garrafais) é o Sons of Apollo.
Afinal, uma formação que contém Jeff Scott Soto nos vocais, o guitarrista Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, o mítico baixista Billy Sheehan, o tecladista Derek Sherinian e o onipresente baterista Mike Portnoy, desperta a curiosidade de quem gosta de boa música quando atuam juntos, seja no estúdio ou no palco.
Até por isso, quando eles trazem na bagagem um primeiro disco de estúdio como o excelente “Psychotic Symphony” a expectativa para um disco ao vivo como esse “Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony” só aumenta.
Registrado no Roman Amphitheatre em Plovdiv, cidade da Bulgária, em 22 de setembro de 2018, esse material chegou ao Brasil por um LUXUOSÍSSIMO trabalho do selo Hellion Records, num box que engloba um digipack quádruplo, com um DVD e três CDs.
Aqui comentaremos com mais destaque o registro em vídeo, pois os CDs trazem o áudio do show. Porém, cabe mencionar que no segundo CD temos a execução de “Dream On”, do Aerosmith, e “Comfortably Numb”, do Pink Floyd, registradas em apresentações distintas da presentes no DVD.
“God of the Sun” abre o show mostrando que técnica, precisão e excelência musical não são apenas conseguidos em estúdio por esse time de músicos. No palco, onde o rock deve ser cultuado todos esses elementos aparecem ainda melhores e injetados da adrenalina gerada pela troca de energia com o público que estava dominado no fim dessa primeira canção.
Daí, a banda desfilou músicas como “Signs of the Time” (com peso encorpado e teclados insanos), “Divine Addiction” (com sus melodia sinuosa e herança purpleneana), “Just Let Me Breath” (com Ron Thall mostrando que tem uma ótima voz e uma banda claramente se divertindo enquanto toca), “Lost In Oblivion” (e seu refrão irresistível), “Alive” (ainda mais bela ao vivo), “Labyrinth” (essa junto com uma orquestra) e encerrou o show com “Coming Home”.
Nessa primeira parte da apresentação, onde executaram suas composições de “Psychotic Symphony” mostram muito entrosamento como banda, mesmo nos momentos de protagonismo de cada um dos músicos.
Jeff Scott Sotto é um frontman que impacta tanto pela empatia com o público, quanto pelo carisma de sua voz em meio a todo o musicalmente intrincado repertório da banda. Seu solo é prova disso! E nem só pela emocionante interpretação de “Save Me” do Queen.
Pra quem gosta de jazz rock até mais do que de prog rock vários momentos da apresentação (como em “Opus Maximus”), que soam como jams, serão um deleite, principalmente pelos teclados de Derek Sherinian que carregam os ensinamentos de Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman e Jon Lord. Aliás, muita atenção ao seu solo, que além de ser o mais cativante de todos, ele se inspira muito no guitarrista Eddie Van Halen.
Nesses momentos mais técnicos, por mais que a guitarra e os teclados estejam no protagonismo, é a parceria entre o baixo virtuoso de Billy Sheeran e a bateria onipotente de Mike Portnoy que chamam a atenção pela sustentação diferenciada e o controle de tempo e ritmo.
Ron Thall além de ser um guitarrista de altíssimo nível, com técnica apurada em sua guitarra frestless, contribui muito com os vocais de apoio e com sua presença de palco. Seus duelos com Billy Sheeran são sensacionais também.
Claramente esses músicos buscam trazer de volta o sentimento e grandiosidade dos grandes e catárticos shows da era mítica do rock. Seja pelas músicas interpretadas de forma vibrante, seja pelos longos solos individuais, ou pela festa promovida ao longo do show.
Festa essa que fica divertidíssima durante a execução do tema da Pantera Cor-de-Rosa que ainda amplia o sentimento de versatilidade jazzistica do show.
Ainda na segunda parte do show executam um repertório recheado de hinos do rock como “Kashmir”, do Led Zeppelin, “Gates of Babylon”, do Rainbow, “Diary of Madaman”, de Ozzy Osbourne, “The Show Must Gon On”, do Queen e dedicada à Freddie Mercury, “Hell’s Kitchen” e “Lines in the Sand”, do Dream Theater e “And The Cradle Will Rock” (de longe a melhor e com um show de simpatia de Jeff) do Van Halen, em sua maioria acompanhados de uma orquestra in loco.
